Stop Waiting for the Consultants to Fix Your Industry

Every community bank and credit union I know is waiting for someone else to figure out AI for them. A vendor. A consultancy. A peer who went first. There is a quiet assumption baked into the whole industry: the answers will arrive from outside, fully formed, and we will adopt them.

They will not. And the people best positioned to build the answers are already inside the building.

Here is what fifteen years in financial services data taught me. The consultant who flies in for the AI strategy engagement has never run your core conversion. They have never sat with a lending officer who does not trust the model. They have never watched a transformation die because nobody scoped who operates the thing on a Tuesday. They sell the same deck to your competitor next week.

The practitioner who has lived inside the institution knows where the bodies are buried. That knowledge is not adjacent to the solution. It is the solution.

The word I had to stop using

I say this because I watched myself almost make the opposite mistake. For years I described my own experience as adjacent. My background was in banking and credit unions, and when I looked at new opportunities I hedged: my experience is adjacent to that, I would say. It was a tic dressed up as humility, and it cost me.

Because most adjacent experience is actually direct. You just have not done the translation out loud. Participation loans are syndication. A merger integration is an acquisition integration. Member analytics are customer analytics are equipment finance analytics. The domain noun changes. The work does not.

The same is true for the industry. Community banks keep treating their own hard-won knowledge as not quite the expertise the moment requires, and then they pay someone with a slicker vocabulary to tell them things they already knew.

Practitioner-led reform is not a slogan. It is a recognition that the people who understand the problem are the people who live with it. The reform that sticks in financial services will not come from a whitepaper. It will come from operators who got tired of waiting and built the better way themselves, then shared it.

So here is the challenge, to the data leaders and the lending leaders and the people who actually run these institutions:

Stop describing your own expertise as adjacent. Stop waiting for the answer to arrive from a firm that bills by the hour. You already have the knowledge. What you have been missing is the permission, and I am telling you to stop waiting for that too.

The answers are not coming from outside. They are going to come from you, or they are not going to come at all.
